Pests

The climactic conditions of Australia are ideal for the breeding and multiplying of an extensive range of insects and pests that can cause irreversible damage to many items.

Heritage provide a complete range of services to treat any item, large or small, or any location, private or public. Whether you have one single artefact or a museum sized collection, Heritage Pest Management can develop a solution for treatment and prevention that is tailored to your circumstances. We can provide you with:

  • Complete site inspections - public or private sites
  • Identification of pest and insect activity
  • Non Toxic and Chemical Free treatment wherever possible
  • Education for your staff or yourself in detection of pest activity
  • An ongoing programe to prevent reinfestation and prevent future damage

  • Heritage is always mindful of the dangers posed by chemical treatments to not only your collection or memorabilia, but also to yourself and your visitors - particularly in open public displays. We will always design a Chemical Free treatment as the first option. A Non Toxic or Low Toxic treatment as a second option using natural chemical bases if possible. We will only consider and form of Toxic Chemical treatment if there is absolutely no other solution that can be tried. We always put safety to you, your staff and visitors, the environment you are in, and your collection first.

    Common Pests

    Termite

Termites are common across most of Australia and are responsible for hundreds of millions of dollars in damage to structures and artefacts made of or containing wood each year. Early detection and proper treatment, or better still early application of proper preventative measures are the only way to stop the total destruction these insects inflict. The exact type of treatment for these pests depends on their location and also the extent of the existing infestation and damage.

Borers come in many shapes and sizes. In many cases as with the woodmoth and some other types the adult insect itself does not inflict the damage it is the larvae or grubs that bore into the wood and feed on its enzymes to grow. This means that in more often than not by the time the adult or developed pest is sighted the damage has already been done.

The same is true for many, but not all species of beetle borers. In some species the adult isect itself continues to feed on the wood causing even more damage.

However one thing is true, by the time you notice the tell tale signs of borer activity the grub or grubs have caused the internal damage to you collection or item and the traces of activity, holes, powder, dust excetera, are the signs that the adult has now emerged from your item and is looking for a new home to nest and lay its young who will continue the damage cycle.

Borers in small items like painting frames, wood carvings, chests, furniture items (antique and new), and even in houses can be treated successfully using Low Oxygen or Nitrogen Flushing. This form of treatment is much safer for the item and for you and those who may come into contact with it than toxic chemical treatments.

Low Oxygen and Nitrogen Flushing has even been used successfully on objects as large as a house. The About Us page contains details of the involvement Heritage Pest Management had in applying this type of treatment to an irreplaceable 11th century cottage in England.

    Carpet beetle

Carpet beetles are common indoor pests. Their small size makes them hard to detect on casual observation, but their damage is evident in any artefact, collection or precious item containing or made from a wide variety of fabrics.

Carpet beetles look similar to the common Lady Bug in appearance but feed mainly on satins, silks, lace and anything containing wool. This makes them a definate threat to fabric covered furniture - (antique or new), antique clothing, wedding dresses being stored, drapery, antique mats and runners, bed spreads, embroidered items and of course carpets themselves.

These pests can be easily and successfully treated with Low Oxygen and Nitrogen treatments.

Ants are probably the most common and most widely spaced insect pest in the world, living in just about every square meter on the planet (along with cockroaches).

The particular danger ants pose to any collection or artefact is dependant on the species of ant being treated. Some species may pose no danger at all to artefacts, buildings or collections, while others may be devestating.

Unlike borers, termites and other pests it is virtually impossible to completely erradicate ants from anywhere, however, proper treatment and a thoroughly planned protection programe can remove a current infestation and prevent their return to that particular collection, item or artefact.

    Ants

    Cockroaches

Cockroaches are a common indoor pests that everyone is acquainted with. Their ability to breed rapidly and in great numbers as well as their ability to live in just about every known environment makes them an extremely hard pest to eradicate completely. But they can be controlled.

While Low Oxygen and Nitrogen treatments are effective against these pests they can be very hard to apply since often it would involve treating an entire building by this method. There are however numerous Low and Non Toxic treatments that can be widely applied that work extremely well. Heritage can assist you in removing current infestations in your environment and also provide an ongoing treatment plan that will prevent their reinfestation over time.
