An introduction to who Heritage is

Heritage Pest Management offers a wide range of services specifically for museums and art galleries. These include non-toxic fumigation of artefacts, writing and implementation of integrated pest management programs, collection surveys and staff training.

Alex Roach - Pest Control Officer

Alex Roach worked in the commercial pest control industry before commencing work with the Materials Conservation Division of the Australian Museum in 1990. As the Museum's Pest Control Officer, Alex designed, implemented and maintained the Museum's Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. Whilst working at the Museum, he assisted with research into new methods for controlling insect pests.

In 1994, Alex was awarded the ESSO Scholarship, which enabled him to undertake further studies in North America and Canada. During this time he took part in a pest management for museums course run by the Getty Conservation Institute. He also visited a number of institutions to investigate their pest control programs and to learn some of the latest developments in low-toxic and non-toxic methods for controlling pests in a museum environment.

In 1996 Alex left the Museum and formed Heritage Pest Management. Since its inception, Heritage Pest Management has undertaken numerous inspections, treatments and lectures for many cultural institutions including the Historic Houses Trust of NSW, the Powerhouse Museum, the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Government House and the Art Gallery of NSW.

Alex has written and co-written several articles on pest management for museums. He has presented numerous lectures and workshops to staff of cultural institutions, on practical measures that can be undertaken to control pests.

Alex is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Science at the University of Newcastle. He has completed an Associate Diploma in Applied Science (Biological Techniques) from the Sydney Institute of Technology (1995), Pest Control Theory (1988), and several short courses on insect identification.
